The I Can Read & Succeed Program
A program designed to work with students who have academic and/or behavioral challenges that may impact their learning and/or education. The summer time is a time when students may have “idle hands”; we continue to work with them through tutoring, mentoring, community service activities and other programs during the year. We strive to:
Encourage reading and learning
Improve reading and writing skills
Build vocabulary and communication skills
Increase/encourage parent participation in their child's education and life
Introduce/encourage students to utilize materials at the library
Have students read a minimum of 600 minutes/6 weeks
PSAT/SAT Boot Camp
Our boot camp is a rigorous course designed to teach youth the techiques to become successful in taking the PSAT, SAT or any other profiency test. Although there are various prep courses available, this course teaches stategies that are invaluable to any student. Our facilitors teach logical strategies to help students match answers to problems. Some of the topics addressed will be verbal reasoning skills, writing skills, vocabulary analyzing, and how to easily solve most math problems.
Bowling 4 Books
A recreational fundraiser held at a local bowling alley. Guests are asked to purchase tickets and donate gently used books. Those books are then distributed to local institutions for students in need. Prizes and trophies are awarded to winning players!
Black History Extravaganza
A free educational event focused on raising awareness of historical contributions of African American men and women. The event features a celebration of interpretive dance, singing, spoken word and a themed guest speaker or panel. Local merchants are invited to display and sell their products.
The Scholarship Banquet is The I Can Foundation's capstone flagship event. During the banquet local graduating high school seniors are recognized for their hard work in academics and community service. The Foundation also presents an award to a local community leader demonstrating its four principles. The evening is filled with elegance, inspiration, performances, awards and even dancing! This is a paid ticket event benefiting the Foundation. A silent auction is also held with generous donations from the community and our invaluable corporate sponsors.
